The Power of Small Things

If Not Today, When?

There comes a season in life when the excuses start sounding familiar.

I’ll do that after things settle down.

Maybe next month.

When the house is finally organized.

When work isn’t so busy.

When the kids don’t need me quite so much.

When…

It’s amazing how often “when” quietly becomes “never.”

Not because we don’t care.

Because life keeps presenting us with perfectly reasonable reasons to wait.

I’ve been guilty of it too.

Books I wanted to read.

Flowers I wanted to plant.

Recipes I wanted to try.

Walks I wanted to take.

Dreams I wanted to explore.

They all sat patiently on a shelf called Later.

The trouble with later is that it keeps moving.

One afternoon I caught myself saying,

“I’ve always wanted to…”

And before I could finish the sentence, another thought interrupted me.

“Then why haven’t you?”

Not in a critical way.

Just curious.

The answer wasn’t dramatic.

I was waiting for a day that looked different from the one I already had.

Maybe you’ve done that too.

Waiting for more energy.

Less aches & pains.

More confidence.

More time.

More certainty.

Sometimes those things arrive.

Sometimes they don’t.

But today has something tomorrow never will.

It’s already here.

That doesn’t mean you need to overhaul your life before dinner.

It might simply mean buying the flowers.

Taking the walk.

Calling the friend.

Signing up for the class.

Beginning the journal.

Starting the first page instead of planning the perfect notebook.

The beautiful thing about small beginnings is that they don’t ask for perfection.

They only ask for a beginning.

If there’s something that’s been quietly tapping on your heart for a long time…

Maybe don’t ask yourself whether you’re ready.

Maybe ask a different question.

If not today…

When?
